In this edition I pick out articles and podcasts on a variety of sustainability topics that have caught my attention over the past month - and I promise no mention of the UK election!

1. How to Become a Purpose-Led Marketer

Every month my Cambridge Marketing College colleague, Neil Wilkins, and I run a one-day course titled 'Get Carbon Literate: Understanding and Communicating Climate Change and Sustainability' (you can find dates for upcoming courses at http://marketingcollege.com/events). In the afternoon of that course, we focus on the role marketers can and should play in being more purposeful and more sustainable. The latest edition of the 'Neil Wilkins Podcast' explains how to be a 'Purpose-Led Marketer'. If you agree with his words then come and join us on the training day.

2. Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Our core sustainability training offer at Cambridge Marketing College is the Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability apprenticeship programme (you can find out more at https://www.marketingcollege.com/apprenticeships/Corporate-responsibility-sustainability). In a recent edition of 'The Cambridge Marketing College Podcast' our College CEO, Kiran Kapur, interviewed Robert Powell from Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP in London on his role in establishing the apprenticeship and his passion for the benefit all businessess and their stakeholders can gain from doing good.

3. What corporate finance teams should know about SBTi’s new financial sector guidance

I'm a big believer that making the financial services sector more sustainable will resonate throughout the wider economy. Every business needs a bank, investors and/or external finance and therefore what they ask of that business is important. This GreenBiz Group article explains the new Net Zero rules the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has put in place for banks and other financial institutions and what they will then require from their borrowers and investee companies.

4. FCA’s anti-greenwash rules enter into force

Also in the financial sector, the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has now brought into force new anti-greenwash guidelines and standards for investment and asset managers. These new measures should ensure investors are not misled about the environmental and social impacts of investment funds and prevent vague references to 'sustainability' or 'ESG' in fund marketing. Again, its easy to see how a tightening up on regulations here will have ramifications for all the businesses such funds invest in. This edie article explains more .

5. Hush! Don't Mention the Environment

On the topic of green-washing, I enjoyed this edition of the BBC 'Rare Earth' podcast about green-hushing, the trend for companies to go quiet on their sustainability claims and activities for fear of being accused of green-wash.

6. How strong storytelling can help prioritize the sustainability agenda

Finally for this month, some good advice from the EY 'Sustainability Matters' podcast on the power and value of strong storytelling in sustainability communications. There is so much data in sustainability we can all fall into the trap of thinking that is all that matters when we know people connect much more with clear and compelling stories.
