COP30 & Circular Business Models - November Sustainability Insights
The last month in sustainability has been dominated by COP30, but it's certainly not the only thing that's been going on, so here is what I have enjoyed listening to, reading and watching over the past month:
COP30: Key outcomes agreed at the UN climate talks in Belém
There is a huge amount of coverage on every COP before, during and after the event, but if you want the definitive coverage on what did (or more to the point didn't) happen this year in Belem, then there is no better place to turn than the Carbon Brief - link.
But if you'd prefer to listen to a summary of events and outcomes, then I'd recommend Akshat Rathi's latest episode of the Bloomberg Green 'Zero' podcast - link.
Both links capture perfectly the conundrum of COP, even more succinctly summed up by Britain's energy secretary, Ed Miliband's quote, "This process is a nightmare. But it’s the best process we’ve got."
How does carbon dioxide shape our world?
Just in case all the politics and negotiations that go into a COP mean we lose sight of how we have reached this point in the climate emergency, then this episode of the BBC 's 'The Climate Question' podcast gives an excellent historical view on carbon emissions and climate change - link.
Nothing We Do Is Sustainable
No business is as revered in sustainability circles as Patagonia. They are always held up as the organisation to watch and learn from when tackling the seemingly impossible task of balancing commerce and sustainability. It's well worth having a read of their recently released sustainability report. They pull no punches in explaining the challenges we all face, but continue to inspire and set the 'north star' for purpose and ambition - link.
Why consumer goods giant P&G wants to reinvent the business case for sustainability
And for further inspiration on business sustainability and both its challenges and opportunities, I really enjoyed this interview with Virginie Helias from Procter & Gamble on S&P Global 'All Things Sustainable' podcast - link.
What is a Circular Business Model
My Cambridge Marketing College colleague, Neil Wilkins, hosts an excellent podcast where he usually covers marketing and AI topics, but in this edition, he interviewed Emily Hill from Kantar on circular business. It's a great overview of a fascinating and essential sustainability concept.
