My first career was as an articled clerk to become a Chartered Accountant, “but I found I had a personality and left.” Subsequently I took a degree in Economics and Marketing then began my lifelong career in Advertising, Marketing and especially Direct Marketing.

I have worked mainly in advertising consultancies and agencies, including ones in the JWT and McCann Erickson networks, first in London then in Manchester.  I’ve been successful in exceeding Client briefs across a broad spectrum of both consumer and business sectors in the UK and Europe.  Learning about Retail Sales Promotion from Sir Philip Green was a particularly energising if fast track experience.  More formally I won an IPA Advertising Effectiveness Award for Mangers Sugar Soap.

I believe fervently in the principle of learning from those who have ‘done it’ both as student as well as tutor. So for the past 10 years I’ve been a tutor at Manchester Metropolitan University and on the Institute of Direct Marketing’s Diploma course.  More recently I’ve tutored on Chartered Institute of Marketing’s Diploma course with Cambridge Marketing College.

Since 2001 I have run my own consultancy Savage Advertising Services. There are three divisions that focus on B2B & B2C direct marketing, innovation in mobile phone applications and online info-marketing.

I live on the edge of the Peak National Park with a long suffering wife, a destructive cat and a daft Irish wolfhound.  Our two children have married and escaped.
