Barbara de Waard


Barbara has a long career in international marketing communications, covering consumer, B2B and most recently non-profit marketing.

After completing her Marketing Degree at Lancaster University, Barbara worked for some leading London based agencies: first in entertainment, representing some major brands (Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Company, MGM, Hallmark) and then for Sir Terence Conran at Conran Design Group, as New Business Manager on visual and brand development for clients such as the Body Shop, BHS and Mothercare.

She relocated to Asia in the early 1990s and worked as Marketing and PR Manager for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in Hong Kong, before setting up her own company there: designing, manufacturing and exporting fashion and giftware to retail customers in Asia and Europe. A further expat move to Kuala Lumpur made Barbara focus on business-to-business. She was Executive Director for the Malaysian Dutch Business Council, a private organisation looking after the local interests of large corporate members including Shell, ING, Philips, Heineken, Unilever, to name a few. She also worked on Corporate Communications for BMC Software, an American company specialised in business service management (BSM) software.

Since 2007, Barbara has combined her extensive marketing skills with her personal passion for the amazing natural beauty of South East Asia. She completed a Masters in Charity Marketing and Fundraising at Cass Business School and now has her own eco-business consultancy ( to harness the power of marketing communications for endangered wildlife.

Barbara has also lectured on International Communication Management (ICM) and Marketing at The Hague University and is a member of the Institute of Fundraising.

I just wanted to advise that my study books have arrived today. Wow! That’s very impressive. I wasn’t expecting such a volume of professionally presented publications and study aids as part of the fee - this already way surpasses the support I experienced with a previous marketing college, and I haven’t even logged in to my course yet!
